Bengaluru stampede
On June 4, 2025, a jubilant celebration in Bengaluru turned into a tragic catastrophe when a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed the lives of 11 people and injured over 50 others. The event was organized to honor the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) victory. However, inadequate planning and misinformation led to chaos, overshadowing what should have been a moment of pride for the city.
The Build-Up: A City's Celebration Turns Chaotic
RCB's historic win ignited immense excitement among fans, culminating in a planned victory parade and felicitation ceremony at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Despite the stadium's capacity of 35,000, reports indicate that over 200,000 people gathered in and around the venue, far exceeding expectations. The situation was exacerbated by rumors of free passes being distributed at Gate No. 7, leading to a massive influx of people attempting to enter through a single gate.
The Tragedy Unfolds
As the crowd surged, security measures proved insufficient. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, with individuals climbing over barriers and pushing through narrow gates. The pressure led to people being trampled, resulting in 11 fatalities, including a 13-year-old girl and several young adults. Emergency services struggled to reach the injured due to the dense crowd, and the planned celebrations were promptly canceled.
Official Responses and Accountability
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the incident, acknowledging that neither the state government nor the Karnataka State Cricket Association anticipated such a large turnout. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar issued a public apology, and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to investigate the causes and assign responsibility. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also expressed regret, emphasizing the need for better planning in future events.
